GRASSI Museum of Ethnology, Germany

The GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig holds ethnographic collections from across the world, presented in a way intended to work equally for visitors who come for the art and for those drawn to how other cultures live.

The displays bring together patterned clothing, weapons, jewellery and personal accessories — objects that record intercultural contact and show how closely religious belief, symbolic thinking and everyday practice were bound together.

Its most significant holdings cover Siberian shamanism, Oriental jewellery, Tibetan Buddhist art, and the material culture of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Note for visitors: this is a separate institution from the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts, which shares the same building complex in Leipzig and is also an ASEMUS member.

Collection size: around 200,000 objects.

Permanent collections: East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian and North Asian artefacts.
